Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging
at The Cannabis Alliance

At The Cannabis Alliance, we are committed to advancing Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging (DEIB) as fundamental principles that guide our mission, values, and actions. We recognize that a diverse and inclusive workforce, leadership, and industry ecosystem leads to stronger, more innovative solutions, better decision-making, and greater representation across all levels.

We are dedicated to fostering an environment where all individuals feel valued, respected, and empowered to contribute. This commitment extends beyond mere representation and focuses on creating equitable opportunities and access for individuals from all backgrounds, ensuring that everyone has the support needed to succeed.

Our work is centered on eliminating systemic barriers, addressing inequities within the cannabis industry, and creating spaces where people from all communities—regardless of race, gender, age, sexual orientation, ability, socio-economic background, or any other characteristic—feel a true sense of belonging.

We hold ourselves accountable to this work through measurable actions, ongoing education, and transparent dialogue. We strive to lead by example, ensuring that these values are embedded in our policies, practices, and partnerships, and we are committed to continuous learning and improvement.

Defining DEIB

Diversity: Diversity refers to the differences that exist among people. This includes, but is not limited to, race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, disability, socio-economic status, education, and life experiences. We recognize that diversity is not a one-dimensional concept but a spectrum of experiences, perspectives, and values. The Cannabis Alliance embraces the power of diversity, as it drives innovation, enriches our understanding, and promotes a more dynamic and resilient industry. We actively work to bring diverse voices into the conversation, ensuring that all groups are represented and valued at every level of our organization and the industry at large.

Equity: Equity is about ensuring that all individuals have access to the resources, opportunities, and support they need to succeed. It goes beyond equality, which assumes everyone starts from the same place, and instead addresses the unique barriers and challenges faced by historically marginalized communities. In the context of cannabis, this means acknowledging the inequities caused by the criminalization of cannabis, particularly among Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC), and actively working to dismantle these barriers. We advocate for policies that ensure equitable access to the legal cannabis industry, prioritize the expungement of cannabis-related convictions, and support the creation of pathways for those most harmed by past cannabis laws to enter and thrive in the industry.

Inclusion: Inclusion is the practice of creating environments where all individuals feel welcome, respected, and able to fully participate. It is not enough to simply invite diverse voices into the room; inclusion means engaging with and amplifying those voices, ensuring that all individuals have an opportunity to be heard and to influence decisions. At The Cannabis Alliance, we are committed to creating an inclusive environment where people from all backgrounds can bring their authentic selves to work and participate in shaping the future of the cannabis industry. We actively seek out diverse perspectives and work to foster a culture where differences are celebrated and valued.

Belonging: Belonging is the emotional experience that follows inclusion. It is the sense that individuals are not just tolerated or accepted, but truly valued and respected for who they are. When people experience a sense of belonging, they feel connected to the group and empowered to contribute their unique skills and ideas. At The Cannabis Alliance, we are dedicated to fostering an environment where everyone feels they truly belong—where they are recognized for their individuality and supported in their personal and professional growth. We strive to create a community where individuals feel safe to express their ideas, ask questions, and take risks without fear of judgment or exclusion.

Our Commitment to DEIB

We believe that a commitment to DEIB is essential for creating a sustainable, thriving cannabis industry that works for everyone. As part of this commitment, we actively:

  • Advocate for policy reforms that promote social equity and fair access to the cannabis industry for marginalized communities.

  • Provide educational opportunities to our members to help them understand the importance of DEIB and how to implement it in their businesses.

  • Partner with organizations that share our commitment to social justice, ensuring that our efforts are informed by those who are most impacted by cannabis laws and policies.

  • Offer support and resources to minority-owned businesses and individuals impacted by the war on drugs, ensuring that they have the tools and opportunities to succeed.

  • Create a workplace culture that values diverse perspectives and fosters a sense of community, belonging, and mutual respect.

How We Take Action

At The Cannabis Alliance, DEIB is not just a statement; it is a call to action. Our work in this area is ongoing and will evolve as we learn, grow, and listen to our community. Here are some of the ways we are actively putting our DEIB principles into practice:

  • Policy Advocacy: We advocate for policies that promote fairness, social equity, and justice, particularly focusing on correcting the harms caused by cannabis prohibition. This includes working towards the expungement of cannabis convictions, promoting job opportunities for those formerly incarcerated, and ensuring access to the cannabis industry for people from marginalized communities.

  • Education and Training: We participate in workshops and training sessions to better understand DEIB concepts and how to implement them in our organization. This includes topics like unconscious bias, cultural competency, and how to create inclusive and equitable business practices.

  • Support for Minority-Owned Businesses: We offer mentorship, networking opportunities, and financial support for businesses owned by BIPOC and other marginalized groups. We work to ensure that these businesses have access to the resources they need to succeed in the cannabis industry.

  • Community Engagement: We engage with communities directly affected by cannabis prohibition and work to amplify their voices in policy discussions and industry conversations. We are committed to partnering with organizations that focus on restorative justice and advancing social equity.

  • Accountability: We hold ourselves accountable for the progress of our DEIB initiatives. We regularly assess our strategies, listen to feedback, and adjust our approach to ensure we are creating meaningful change. We encourage our members and partners to hold us accountable as well, fostering a culture of transparency and continuous improvement.

Why DEIB Matters in Cannabis

The history of cannabis prohibition is deeply tied to racial and social injustices. Communities—particularly Black, Latinx, Indigenous, and other marginalized groups, have been disproportionately impacted by criminalization, while access to legal industry opportunities has remained limited. At The Cannabis Alliance, we actively work to address these disparities by advocating for inclusive policies, promoting equitable business opportunities, and amplifying underrepresented voices.
